The apartment is situated in a distinguished 1960s apartment building in Kypseli, one of Athens' most vibrant neighborhoods. Although the apartment has undergone a comprehensive renovation, special attention was paid to preserving as many of the original materials as possible, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship that was prevalent in many Athenian buildings of that era. The wooden floors, along with most of the colorful terrazzo, have been meticulously restored to their original splendor. In the kitchen, white and dark grey marbles have been artfully combined to create a unique checkerboard floor, while the bathrooms are adorned with pale green and saumon tiles, each space reflecting its own distinct character.
The apartment’s unique architectural identity is further enhanced by a series of elaborately detailed custom furniture pieces, which not only provide a functional and flexible layout but also add a distinctive touch to the overall design. The kitchen’s countertop, crafted from three large slabs of grey marble, doubles as an informal dining table and transforms the previously underutilized entrance hall into a lively, functional space. Additionally, a full-height closet on the opposite side of the room offers ample storage, ensuring that the space is as practical as it is aesthetically pleasing.
Regarding the internal layout, the design cleverly takes advantage of the L-shaped floor plan. While the original layout in the back wing remains largely unchanged, preserving the bedrooms, bathrooms, and storage areas, the front of the apartment has been reimagined into a spacious, open-plan living area. A "secret" sliding door discreetly separates the two wings, providing additional privacy to the sleeping quarters when needed. This thoughtful design not only respects the apartment’s history but also enhances its functionality for modern living.
The title "Green, Salmon and Checkerboard" was inspired by the key design elements that define the renovation. Each of these materials and colors played a pivotal role in shaping the apartment's character. The soft green and warm salmon tiles used in the bathrooms introduce a subtle yet vibrant palette that gives each space its own unique identity. Meanwhile, the distinctive checkerboard floor in the kitchen, created from contrasting white and dark grey marbles, not only serves as a visual centerpiece but also reflects the thoughtful blend of tradition and modernity throughout the apartment.
