The apartment is situated in a characteristic 1960s building in Ampelokipoi, a neighborhood rich in Athenian history. Although the apartment underwent a comprehensive renovation, great care was taken to preserve as many of the original materials as possible, showcasing the high-quality craftsmanship that was a hallmark of Athenian buildings from that era. The original wooden floors and the vibrant terrazzo floors were meticulously restored, bringing them back to their former glory and honoring the apartment’s historical roots.
In the entrance area, a striking checkerboard floor was created using a combination of white and dark grey marbles, setting a distinctive tone as you step inside. The bathroom features vibrant yellow tiles, adding a pop of color that brightens the space while maintaining a harmonious balance with the apartment’s overall design.
A series of intricately designed custom furniture pieces not only provide a functional and adaptable layout but also contribute to the apartment’s unique architectural identity. At the heart of the home, a central plywood composition serves as a gathering point, connecting the surrounding rooms and transforming the once-empty entrance hall into a vibrant focal point. The iconic cylindrical pillar, strategically placed at the entrance, not only supports the bar table but also serves as a welcoming element, greeting visitors with its bold presence.
The internal layout remains largely faithful to the original design, with most of the rooms retaining their initial arrangement. However, the decision to unify the internal spaces where the checkerboard floor is laid created a more cohesive flow throughout the apartment. The chamfered corner in the living room creates a cozy, triangular nook that offers a direct view of the Athens Tower, just a few blocks away. This clever design choice enhances the sense of connection between the apartment and its urban surroundings, blending modern living with a respectful nod to the past.
