Our design concept originates from a straightforward yet powerful idea: redefining the circulation model in a densely populated building to foster interaction and sociability, rather than adhering to the conventional central corridor typology that often results in dull, dark spaces. To achieve this, we relocated the central corridor to the southern side of the building, making it a defining feature of our proposal. By placing the corridor externally, we allow it to benefit from Cyprus's favorable climate, ensuring natural light and ventilation for all rooms. This approach transforms the corridor into a bright, inviting space where students can not only move around but also socialize and enjoy the environment
The choice of this circulation model significantly impacts the building's volumetry. The linear arrangement of the rooms, placed side by side, results in an elongated structure that stretches beyond the plot's boundaries. To maintain the linear organization while fitting the entire program within the plot’s limits, we implemented an intricate "bending" process. This process resulted in an iconic curved structure that resembles a series of boomerang-like shapes spreading across the plot.
The curved form allows us to preserve the linear corridor model while simultaneously creating diverse spaces and plazas throughout the building. Additionally, by ensuring that the angles between the building's wings are always obtuse, we provide unobstructed views of the green surroundings from every room, enhancing the connection between the interior and the natural environment.
All public programs are strategically located on the ground floor, nestled between the plateaus and edges formed by the bending of the upper structure. The organic shaping of the building creates varied spaces and qualities on the ground floor, which we have utilized to develop a cohesive public landscape rather than imposing rigid building volumes. This public landscape integrates seamlessly with the existing height contours of the plot, and large, organically shaped staircases lead up to the residential wings above. This design creates a smooth transition from public to semi-public spaces, and eventually to private areas, ensuring a harmonious flow throughout the entire building. The result is a dynamic environment that encourages interaction, blending architecture with the natural landscape in a way that enhances the overall experience for its inhabitants
